How to Throw a Mother’s Day Brunch She’ll Never Forget

Welcome to Come On Over, a Food52 newsletter about hosting life’s big and little moments. It’s where we share our personal tips and tricks, from modern-day etiquette—shoes off or shoes on?—to making extra seating out of every surface of an apartment. This week, it’s Mother’s Day prep from Kelly.

Fun fact: In Ireland and the U.K., Mother’s Day falls in March—so technically, I’ve already fulfilled my daughterly duties for the year. Which means now, the spotlight’s on my mother-in-law... and on you. Every mom (and mom figure) is different, so take what resonates and leave the rest. Let’s get into it.

1. Who’s All Comin’?

It’s a very different affair depending on if the youngins are there. Decide whether you want to keep things mom-only so you don’t have to explain why you’re eating cake at 10 am, or if the kiddos are coming, build in space, activities, and food ahead of time to keep them entertained.

2. The Family Touch

It’s the little things that make it feel personal. Set out her favorite tea or cocktail, add a framed family photo or two to the table, and enlist the kids (or grandkids) to make place cards or handwritten notes. Think of it as a love letter—just served with pancakes.

3. Just Like Mother Used to

The day is about honoring your mom or mother figure. What better way to do so than by serving her signature dish, made by you? Bonus points if you keep it a surprise and let the thoughtfulness hit the moment she walks through the door.

4. Beyond the Bouquet

No shade to flowers, but consider something different to present to mom at brunch this year. Food52 editor Julia Youman asked the team for their top picks for every mom: the gardeners, the home chefs and entertainers, and even the fashionistas, too. And if you want to push the boat further: try a cheese bouquet.

5. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (On a Bagel)

Only you know your mom and mom-friends, so put on a spread that suits their style. But if you need more inspo, I can’t stop thinking about this sweet and savory bagel bar. The colors, the textures—it’s a showstopper and won’t take you forever to prepare.

6. Because She’s Worth It

Break out the good stuff—she deserves it. Let this be the excuse you’ve been waiting for to use the fancy china or that vintage stoneware drink dispenser you’ve been saving for “someday.” Today is a special occasion, so go ahead and make it feel like one.
