Long ago I lived in Monzennakacho in Tokyo. A short walk from my home was the most charming tsukemono pickle shop from Kyoto called Kintame 近為. Kintame sits just in front of Fukagawa Fudodo temple. I often went to Kintame for the bubucha-zuke lunch. More than a dozen pickles is served with a grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. For me it is one of my most comforting and delicious meals.
Vegetables pickled so many ways and for different lengths of time. Super intense Nara-zuke taking years to make and nuka-zuke rice bran fermented pickles. Accents for the tsukemono include wasabi, sansho, and karashi Japanese mustard.
The meal is about the many expressions of the vegetables and then wide swath of flavors and textures. I also love the presentation. At this lunch 16 different pickles were served. The pickles are sold in the front of the restaurant and diners can purchase with a 10% discount.
Sadly Kintame in Monzennakacho is only a retail shop these days. I believe this happened during the pandemic. It is my dream that someday it reopens in Tokyo. Until then I look forward to trips to Kyoto for my nostalgic memories being awakened. Highly recommend this lunch spot. Reservations are required as it’s a small shop. It is on the far north side of the city, on the way to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion. I took the bus to Senbon Imadegawa bus stop.
I wrote about Kintame, which started in 1879, for my Kyoto Go To List:

Some of my friends have gone here and they all email me enthusiastically about what a lovely meal it is. If you love vegetables or pickle, bookmark Kintame for your next holidays in Kyoto.
