Naruko Onsen’s rich history dates back over 1,000 years. The hot springs was first discovered in 837. It is one of the larger hot springs areas in Japan.

There are many onsen ryokan inns with hot springs in Naruko Onsen, Miyagi. We stayed at Naruko Onsen Yumoto Kissho which is up a small hill from the train station.

The hotel provides a shuttle from the station, just be sure to reserve it in advance of your arrival.

We loved the view from the room overlooking the village. There is a large public hot springs and there are also four private ones that are  first come, first served. Perfect for families or for travelers who have tattoos.

Dinner and breakfast here are large buffets rich with local dishes like sasa kama boko grilled fish cakes and shiso maki of sweet miso wrapped in shiso and pan fried. There is also a complimentary bowl of ramen at 10:30 p.m. We opted for breakfast only and had soba in the city for dinner. See the previous post.

Getting to Naruko Onsen from Tokyo is a shinkansen ride to Furukawa Station and then a local train to Naruko Onsen Station. It is about 3 hours by train plus time for the transfer. The train going the other way goes to Yamagata to Tsuruoka.
