Oita Wagyu: A Guide to Oita’s Premium Japanese Beef

6 hours ago 8

Oita Wagyu (おおいた和牛) is a premium certification for selected Oita Bungo Beef from Oita Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. It is not a separate breed. To qualify, the beef must reach meat quality Grade 4 or 5. It must also come from a participating farm whose flavor-focused feeding program includes rice, beer lees, or similar ingredients. The brand launched on September 4, 2018. Its roots, however, reach back to 1918, when Oita began standardizing Bungo cattle. Maybe you saw “Bungo beef” on a menu in Beppu and wondered how it differs.
