Ramen Exhibition

1 week ago 11

21_21 Design Sight is a hip design museum with cool exhibitions like the current one is all about ramen bowls. 90% of Japanese ramen bowls come from Mino. Mino’s rich history of pottery dates back 1,300 years. At the exhibit there is a video on what makes Mino a unique source for the clay used to make Mino ware.

The exhibit includes dozens of ramen bowls. The variety of shapes and designs is cool to see when the bowls are presented together. There are ramen stalls set up so you can feel what it’s like to be either a diner or the cook making ramen. There is lots of information in English(!) regarding both ramen and the pottery.

The museum itself is a work of art as most of it is underground, but natural light fills the interior. The exhibit runs through Sunday, June 15th. It is closed Tuesdays (except April 29 and May 6). Admission is 1,600 yen (about $11).

If you’re going around lunch time my favorite ramen in Tokyo, Kagari, has a branch in Roppongi Hills, a short walk from the museum. It is a creamy chicken tori paitan.
