Shikajika

Onigiri breakfast at Shikajika inside of Tachikawa Station. The rice is cooked in a donabe pot. The restaurant specializes in set meals based around rice including karaage fried chicken, grilled salmon, or simmered pork belly. There is an intriguing wagyū hitsuma bushi of thin slices of marbled wagyū beef over a bed of hot rice. A very Instagram-friendly dish.

I cam for the #onigiri. Only 850 yen ($5.50) for the basic morning set. I upgraded for the salmon and ikura for 1,050 yen ($6.75). Breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m. and the morning special runs until 11:00 a.m. The rice balls are huge, so come hungry. On the table are bottomless bowls of tsukemono pickles. Today a sweet yellow takuan daikon and a tart purple shibazuke cucumbers.

Shikajika is inside Tachikawa Station on the JR Chūō line. It is near the North Gate. Helpful if you arrive to take the stairs up towards the North Gate.
