Have you watched the K-Pop Demon Hunters movie? My daughter recommended it to me and I have to say I didn’t really much high expectation before watching it. But I have to say I really enjoyed it!! The movie was a lot of fun to watch, with bits of cute and funny Korean cultural elements thrown in along with very catchy songs. But more than all of that, I think the movie has a great message, especially young people – on how to love oneself while understanding and overcoming one’s own insecurities and finding support from one’s community to fight off negative feelings that feed on shame.

I especially love the conversation between Jinu and Rumi about his past, his shame and guilt about the mistakes he made in the past and how Rumi gently tells him that he can still turn things around to do good.

Anyway, I will leave the rest up to you and to the movie critics! Now, let’s talk about food!!

While watching the movie, it made me so happy that there were quite a few Korean foods that appear in the movie. And I happen to have the recipes for most of them!! I’m missing Corn dogs and Sundae (blood sausage) but other than that, you can cook my recipes and maybe host a K-Pop Demon Hunters Movie night with all or some of the dishes!!

HAVE A K-POP Demon Hunters party with my menu!

  1. GIMBAP + ODENG GUK + HOTTEOK– this is all you need to have a street food version of K-pop demon hunters party! For put it over the top, make Tteokbokki and it will the best fun party ever!
  2. SEOLLEONTANG + KKAKDUGI + RICE – you should start the soup the day before and if you want to make your own Kkakdugi (radish kimchi), make the kimchi 2-3 days in advance.
  3. RAMEN dinner – make one or more from my 3 Ramen recipes, and buy some frozen Mandu and pan fry them.
  4. COLD NOODLE SOUP + BULGOGI – I listed this last because making Naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) at home is a bit involved. But if you can do it, it’s totally worth it. And then make some Beef Bulgogi or Pork Oven Bulgogi to go with the noodles.

1. Gimbap/Kimbap – classic & Mini Mayak Gimbap

Kimbap or Gimbap – Seaweed Rice Roll

So some people think Kimbap or Gimbap is Korean version of a sushi roll because it uses the same bamboo mat and looks similar to sushi. But there are records in the history books from Chosun dynasty (which is before Japan’s invasion of Korea) that mention wrapping rice with Korean gim/kim.

2. RAMEN – more than JUST instant cup ramen

I know you only need to buy the 3 different cup ramens of the 3 demon hunters from the store but I thought I’d share my 3 instant ramen recipes that are a little more involved because they are all so delicious!! I have Jjapaguri (Jjapaghetti + Neoguri), Kimchi Butter Ramen (Kimchi, Butter added to ramen) and Golbimmyeon in the post!

3. HOTTEOK (SWEET SYRUP PANCAKE)

Hotteok 호떡 is a classic Korean sweet snack that is made with chewy flour batter with a hot syrup inside it. In the K-pop demon hunter movie, you will see a stack of hotteok pancakes.

Korean Dessert Pancake – Hotteok(호떡)

The moment you bite into this pancake, the hot cinammony syrup will ooze into your mouth. Chewy dough with the fried crispness on the outside and the sweet sugar syrup with bits of nuttiness makes it one of my favorite Korean snack/dessert since childhood days.

4. NAENGMYEON (COLD NOODLE SOUP)

I am surprised that Naengmyeon 냉면 appeared in the movie but why not! The demon hunters get treated to this cool and refreshing dish after a strenuous rehearsal.

Mul Naengmyeon (Korean Cold Noodle Soup)

Mul Naengmyeon is the best summer food to have with its refreshingly clean broth. I have 2 different recipe broths – one with a full made from scratch beef broth and another that's almost instant that's ready in minutes.

5. SEOLLEONTANG (BEEF SOUP)

Seolleongtang 설렁탕 is a way Rumi’s friends help her feel better after losing her voice and letting her know that she is not alone. Seolleongtang is something Koreans love to eat when they are low on energy.

6. ODENG GUK (FISH CAKE SOUP)

Odeng (fish cake) soup is a very popular snack to have either with Gimbap or Tteokbokki. It’s made from anchovy broth with fish cake cooked in the broth.

A tummy warming soup that makes you feel so good all the way. This soup stock can also be used to make noodle soups and added to tteokbokki instead of water for extra flavor.
