Part of our travel routines is visiting local supermarkets. It’s so much fun. We try and avoid chain supermarkets because they tend to not carry much local products.
But, I do make an exception for Lopia, which is a discount supermarket from the Tokyo area. It has a huge shop in the basement level 2 of the Yodobashi Camera electronics shop in Kyoto. The building is about three minutes north of Kyoto Station.
It has everything. If I lived in Kyoto I would do my supermarket tour here because there is just so much to see. My clients sometimes complain about not eating enough fruit. If you’re in Kyoto stop by Lopia to pick up some fruit to enjoy in your hotel room.
There’s also takeaway sushi, ikura – to eat with a spoon 🤣, furikake, mayonnaise, tinned seafood, miso, dashi ingredients (kombu and katsuobushi), noodles (udon, somen, and soba), nori, and more.
Lopia is a great market to stock up on pantry staples. It’s rare to see a discount supermarket in the city center.
