Kofu in Yamanashi is only 90 minutes west of Tokyo on the Azusa express train on the Chūō line. The city is walkable and there are buses to areas for hiking, waterfalls, shrines and temples. For me I usually stay in the city as there is enough to see.
Yamanashi is famous for fruit and wine. In Kofu Station is a cool stand and sip wine bar with small bites. Bottles of wine also for sale to bring home. South of the station is a friendly and helpful tourist information office. We always pick up maps and ask about any special events happening at the moment like museum exhibits. There is also a water refill station serving local Kofu water!
Indenya is a shop that dates back four hundred years for bags, wallets, and more made from deerskin with lacquer-based designs. This traditional craft is something I carry with me daily as I use both a wallet and the card for my commuter card and business cards. On the second floor is a small museum.
At the station is a statue of Takeda Shingen, one of Japan’s most famous feudal warlords.
Kofu Castle burned down in a fire but the grounds and a watchtower are still there and a short distance from Kofu Station.
On all of our trips we visit local supermarkets. Our favorite in Kofu is the Ichiyama Mart. Yamanashi-ken, Kofu-shi, Shiobe 1-1-10. It is in a small mall called ITSMORE. If the weather is good it’s walkable, but if it’s hot it’s a short taxi ride.
For the Azusa train we took the green car. Comfortable seats, spacious, and quiet as there are fewer people in the car.
