Okutō Honten near Kōfu Station serves up many local dishes of Yamanashi prefecture.
Tori motsu ni, simmered chicken giblets was created here in 1913. Liver, gizzard, and other offal is simmered in a sweet soy sauce. The dish has since become a regional dish that is served at many restaurants.
Basashi, horse sashimi. It’s like steak tartare, but in Japan served with ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. Also a local dish from Kumamoto.
Hōtō is a hot pot of udon and vegetables cooked until tender with miso added at the last minute. I love that at Okutō the dish is cooked at the table.
We added to our meal fried soba noodles. Okutō is also famous for their soba buckwheat noodles. The chicken tempura was tender and oishii delicious.
Okutō is a popular restaurant, so go early or queue in line. Nearby Kosaku has a similar menu and is also popular. Kosaku (Marunouchi 1-7-2) is a few shops down from Okutō. Both shops have a waiting list set up in front of the shop. Write down your name and how many in your party if the restaurant is full.
