Koma

From Kofu, Yamanashi, I jumped on the Chūō line train west towards Kobuchizawa. My friends have made the garden at a new delicatessen called Koma. My girlfriend said that I should come and check out this new restaurant. She knew that it was very special, and that I would like it.

Chef Ayako Ono, former head chef at Ottolenghi and chef Dawid Nowosadzki, former head chef at Ottolenghi and NOPI, the first Ottolenghi restaurant. At the center of the vegetarian menu is a colorful variety of prepared salads made with organic vegetables. There is a curry, lasagna, and stuffed pita bread – all vegetarian. In lieu of meat a house made soy meat is used. I loved the salads with vibrant acidity and new flavors to me. As a big fan of the Ottolenghi cookbooks it was about as close to London as I will get for the near future. I loved it all.

Koma is named after the Kaikoma-gatake mountains that is the backdrop to the area. The delicious waters that come from these Southern Alps makes it possible to have rice and vegetables. Ayako said, “Koma wants to be a presence that supports people like that mountain”.

The restaurant was busy on this weekend so I only had a chance to say hi to Ayako. She did say she likes the garden my friends built for their restaurant. After lunch we walked through the garden and my friend pointed out many of the herbs that they planted for the restaurant. The Kaikoma-gatake mountains are a stunning backdrop to the garden and restaurant. I look forward to going back.

My friends made the garden at Koma.☺️
