The Railway Museum is a fabulous museum with many old trains that visitors can go into and see the history of rail transportation in Japan. We could enter a lottery for different experiences and got in on the working the counter at a station. It was a fun experience.
The museum is huge. There is a restaurant and two stalls selling ekiben that can be eaten on site. On one side of the museum are actual shinkansen bullet train tracks on the other side local trains. Fun to sit and watch trains pass by.
Most of the visitors were families with little kids but also many adults. Something for everyone. We went through the museum doing it all in Japanese, but I think there is QR codes throughout that will give you some English explanations. I am not 100% on that.
Note that there is a different museum for subway trains, The Metro Museum, in Higashi-Kasai on the east side of Tokyo. It’s not nearly as big as The Railway Museum.
The Railway Museum is north of Tokyo in Omiya, Saitama. It is near the Testudo Hakubutsukan Station so you do have to change trains at Omiya.
