Eat-in restaurants in department store basement food halls can offer cool dining options. I am most excited about Konga in the basement of Nihonbashi Takashimaya’s annex building. It is a short walk from Tokyo Station.
The popular onigiri shop Konga has a big menu of fillings. My favorite is the unique Bolognese which is the tomato and meat sauce for pasta, but here in a rice ball with grated Parmesan cheese. Other popular fillings include egg yolk marinated in soy sauce, grilled salmon, spicy mentaiko pollack roe, teriyaki chicken, and tinned tuna with mayonnaise.
Beyond onigiri the menu is simple. Miso soup and pickles. Just the basics. The miso soup has a rich aroma of smoked katsuobushi.
Only a handful of seats and it’s popular. The shop also does takeaway and there is a picnic area on the rooftop of Takashimaya department store if the weather is good.
